2 Things to Ponder Before You Buy a Live Piranha

The very first thing you have to do is to ensure you are not doing something prohibited by law by becoming an owner of pet piranhas. There are a few countries have laws that prevent the ownership of piranhas as pets. So before getting one, make sure you check your federal and local laws to be on the safe side.

Another thing you have to consider is your commitment. Piranhas live long and they need a lot of care like any other exotic fish. Better be sure you want one before you get one and end up neglecting it.

Setting up the tank

Mature piranhas will love space – about 2 gallons of water per inch – so better get at least a 25 gallon capacity tank before you get your piranhas. Keep the water warm; the optimum temperature would be around 76 to 83 degrees Fahrenheit. Too cold and the piranha’s immune system will weaken due to stress. Too warm and the dissolved oxygen in the tank will be alarmingly low.

Piranhas are messy eaters so you will want to have a double filtration system set in place. You will also want to set-up plants and hiding spots for piranhas as this is how their habitat is in the open. About 50% to 75% should feature this natural habitat look.

How many per tank?

Mature piranhas love to live a life alone so a 20 gallon tank can accommodate only one mature piranha. For two to three piranhas, get a 55 gallon tank.

What to feed?

Whitebait, prawns, lance fish, smelt, lean chicken slice, beef heart are good food for them. Small chunks of zucchini and pieces of raw potato will add variety so give them these occasionally.
