Options To Shelter Stray Cats

by Admin on May 26, 2011

If you have stray cats coming through your area and you offer them food and companionship when they stop by near your home, consider providing them with a safe place to warm up when it starts getting cold outside.  Any dry shelter area that will let a cat warm up and recover from dangerously cold weather has the potential to save that cat’s life when the temperature gets low enough to start freezing the tips of their ears, their paws, and their tail.  An outdoor cat shelter can be as simple or complicated as you want it to be while still providing the cat in your area with a safe place to rest.

Purchasing Shelters For Stray Cats

Wooden Houses For Cats – There is no cat shelter out there that will look as good in your yard as a well built wooden outdoor cat house designed for a family pet.  These houses usually come on stilts to protect the area underneath from damage and avoid moisture, and many of them are even insulated.  They are more expensive than other options, which can be an issue for some.

Cat houses Made Of Plastic – There are some cat houses out there built from plastics to be low cost alternatives to the high end wooden houses that most people buy.  These synthetic options are perfectly fine for keeping your cat warm and safe during the winter, though some of them may end up needing to be placed in a sheltered location or anchored down to stay in one place if the weather gets bad.

Building A Cat Home

If you don’t have the money or desire to spend money on protecting the cat that visits you, consider making a homemade outdoor cat house out of stuff you can get for nearly nothing or have already.  Just about anything that will offer a cat a dry spot on the ground that is protected from heavy winds and capable of helping them store heat will work just fine as a cheap outdoor cat house, at least temporarily.
