How to Clean Indoor Sugar Glider Cages Sets

by Admin on June 7, 2011

Sugar gliders are territorial creatures, which can lead to strong odors coming out of their cage. It’s very important to keep their environment clean, not only for their health, but to keep these odors under control. In this article we’ll be talking about the right way to clean sugar glider cages, and some helpful tips.

General clean up

Food dishes and water bottles should be washed daily with hot water and soap. We recommend wiping down the wires of the cage with hot water as well every couple of days. Changing the bedding, be it newspaper or wood shavings, should be done about every three days. It’s also important to disinfect accessories and toys when they get very dirty, but rinse them extremely well.

Cleaning the cage

When washing sugar glider cage sets it’s helpful to have an extra cage to keep your pet. You can also use a bounding pouch where sugar gliders can sleep until you’re done. Take the cage outdoors, apply disinfectant, and let it sit for ten minutes. Lastly, rinse it with a hose thoroughly, and leave it under the sun to dry for several hours.

Helpful tips on sugar glider cages maintenance

  • Don’t clean everything at once: If you do this, your pet will not recognize the cage as his home, and begin marking his territory with an extra effort. We recommend splitting up the cleaning
  • Keep a handy spray bottle solution at hand – Keep equal parts of water and vinegar in a spray bottle to clean up and deodorize. Just in case you leave residue, it’s nontoxic for sugar gliders
  • Careful with disinfectant – If you use bleach or any other disinfectant make sure you rinse everything off. If you leave any residue it can be deadly for your sugar glider. Leaving the cage under the sun will decompose any remains
  • Odor control – An odor eliminator can be helpful. You can spray it daily on the cage, and any spots with a strong odor. It will keep the smell under control
  • Careful with wood shavings – Avoid cedar, aspen or pine shavings. These can be harmful to your pet’s health

So, how often should you clean up? It depends on two things. First, the size of the cage, which by the way should be an appropriate cage (don’t use indoor rabbit cages or fish tanks) that measures 3 feet in width, height and length at the least. Secondly, it depends on how many sugar glider you keep inside it. Generally speaking, the tips provided above will work, and will help keep your pet healthy, as well as unpleasant odors under control.
